Pilar Mateos was born in Valladolid, the city where she lived until she was twenty years old. She has aimed the most of her abundant literary works to the youngest readers. In this field, she was awarded with “Lazarillo” and “Barco de Vapor” prizes, among others. Regarding her job in the radio, she won the first prize of drama scripts from Radio Nacional de España (Spanish Public Radio Station), in 1980, and the Margarita Xirgu prize of radio drama (1985).
Cervantes Chico Award in 2009 to all her career.
The pathmaker is a story about initiation, in which, throughout a magical path, the big discoveries of adolescence come one after another: the dazzle of art and solitude, the learning of human freedom and solidarity, the scandals… A young dream of a fairer world that is broken by the severity of the real world.
This book means to Pilar Mateos’ narrative an experience as peculiar as fascinating, which reaches an unusual literary quality.
“The main character is a young girl aged 13, who will meet new people and will go through experiences that will make her mature but without giving her innocence up. The girl will be shocked by a strange character, the pathmaker, and they will try together to find the secluded path to Missing City (or, in other words, to find the evidences of a world which is different to the world they know). The atmosphere of those dark, oppressive days of Franco regime, is well described in this novel, which results, at the same time, really poetic and puzzling”.
