"I was sitting in my room one night, all snug and comfy, when there was a knock on the door. Now who might it be but my friend!"
Now, that's as snug and promising a beginning to a never-ending book as one could wish for, isn't it? The bear gets a visit from the fox, who is in turn visited by the hare, the squirrel goes to see the hare and is visited by the owl. And the owl? Well, the owl is comfortably ensconced in her wing chair knitting happily. But who could ever be in need of such a long scarf as this? Well, if it isn't her friend, the big brown bear, whom we've already met at the very beginning!
Henrike Wilson's cosy pictures tell a story that is no less exciting for being simple, and which never really comes to an end. Not only will the readers enjoy guessing who it might be now knocking on the door, but they'll be amazed at what all those animals of the forest will get up to of a night, how and where they live, and how glad they are to have their friens over.
This is a great book about friendship, and about the art of storytelling - you couldn't ask more for a bedtime story!
When a baby is born, it is accompanied with an inconceivable amount of happiness. We make wishes of a lucky life, and, the best ones among these wishes are inside this work of art.
“Actually, this book should be given to those that have just become parents, but it is also good to read it to the children, or let the children read it, because it contains good wishes that have been turned into poetry and are aimed to the newborns… It is a warm, gratifying, positive, cheerful text, a bright choice to read before switching lights off, before falling in Morpheus’ hug (CLIJ, Children and Young Adult’s Literature Notebooks).
Carlota the sheep climbs trees, she dives into the stream and she even goes up the sharpest rocks. All these things are uncharacteristic of a sheep and the rest of her flock reproaches her about it. However, one day the shepherd has an accident and there is only one able to get help: Carlota.
Carlota the Sheep was awarded by The New York Times as “the best picture book of the year”.
Critics have said:
“A sweet story that, in addition, helps you to overcome your own fears” (Brigitte).
“You become fond of Carlota the sheep at once” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung).
“A lovely picture book for those who dream from time to time of being, for once, heroes, rebel, wild ones.” (Neue Ruhrzeitung).
Carlota is a little wild thing and you can’t help it. But, what about those strange friends she has? Why on Earth does she have to play in the mud with Francisco the pig? Why playing head butt with Cuniberto the bull? Has anyone ever seen a sheep diving with the ducks? Surely you have not. That is not charasteristic of a sheep! At least, this is the way the elders think. But one day, two sheep and Charly, the old shepherd dog, are reported missing. Suddenly, someone that has got with really good friends is needed to pursue the adventure.
“Anu Stohner and Henrike Wilson have made Carlota the sheep a heroine that will immediately win our heart” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung).
“a wise choice for a children’s picture book” (Salzburger Nachrichten).
A little bear is pacing around the forest. He is bored. No one is able to spend some time with him, everybody is too busy. Eventually, he decided to lay down on the ground and do nothing. Then, something surprising takes places; suddenly, new ideas springs to his mind and he starts to imagine his own adventures. This is a book that encourages readers to cope with their own boredom and even to find the fun in it.
